Pick up water, glass or timber, haul it up the mountain pass, and deliver it at the summit. You are paid for what arrives, not what you loaded. Water sloshes and spills, glass breaks, timber rolls off the back. Go over the edge and the run is gone. Park in a lay-by and it saves - come back later to that same spot, with the load you had left.
